How Reframe Sessions work:

Hi, I’m Freya

I lead Reframe Sessions. I am a practising psychotherapist living and working on Gadigal and Bidjigal land / the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.

I work therapeutically with a range of individuals and groups, including teenagers, families, execs & athletes. I am particularly interested in supporting the emotional well-being and mental strength of individuals during and after injury.

As a runner and ex competitive rower myself, I have experienced the challenges that injuries can bring, and the possibilities than can unfold with meaningful support.

  • Reframe Sessions have helped settle my mind during one of my most challenging times of my life recovering from injury. On many days, it’s been a case of mind over matter, and speaking with Freya has helped me steer my mind to actually stimulate my healing rather than impede it.

  • “Recovering from an injury is not just physical, it’s psychological. Understanding your thoughts, reframing your mindset and connecting with those who’ve gone through it is invaluable. Freya understands this first hand. Reframe Sessions are a must-have for anyone recovering from an injury to come back stronger mentally and physically.”

  • "Freya approaches our conversations with empathy and attentiveness, asking thought-provoking questions that encourage introspection and offer new perspectives. Her listening skills are exceptional, and her holistic approach has empowered me to apply the skills I've developed into different aspects of my life. "

  • Recovery from an injury can be really challenging on more than just a physical level. Even once we have done all the rehab in the world there’s often anxiety and stress that the injury might happen again. For a lot of injuries, this is the biggest barrier of all. Getting guidance and support with the psychological side is something we strongly encourage and should be promoted in all healthcare!

FAQs

  • In the short term, the aim is to provide psychological support to athletes when they need it. Longer term, what we learn from Reframe Sessions will also inform a research paper written for the Dulwich Centre - the home of Narrative therapeutic practice. The big goal is to raise awareness of this as a valuable area of work and develop principles of impactful practice for future practitioners.

  • Freya: I have a decade of experience working with businesses, teams, families and individuals to unlock positive change. I've been lucky to learn from and lead talented teams at Google, the BBC, and the NHS to name a few.

I have a degree in Psychology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Systemic Family Therapy. I am currently deepening my skillset with a Masters in Clinical Family Therapy and a one year program in Narrative Practice at the Dulwich Centre. Alongside this I am a Certified Red2Blue Coach where I train high performance teams to work under pressure. I also have several years of experience working with the Samaritans - a helpline for people experiencing suicidal thoughts.

I am registered with PACFA and AFT as a student.

  • The approach to Reframe Sessions is shaped by Freya's core training in systemic and narrative therapy. Problems are looked at in the context of the bigger picture of people’s lives. The way a problem affects - and is affected by - our relationships, the social and cultural factors that shape our experiences, and the way each of these influence the stories we tell about ourselves. We'll work together to identify the skills, values, and communities that can help reduce the influence of the problem on a person’s life.

Reframe Sessions use these ideas in combination with coaching techniques and mindset skills that tend to work well with athletes.

  • They are open to any kind of athlete, at any level. Anyone who values movement and exercise, and has felt sidelined for any period of time with an injury. Whether it's a current injury you're living with, or a past injury that has left mental scars, your experience counts.

  • 1-1 sessions last about 50 minutes. Much like other physio appointments or therapeutic conversations, the sessions will be tailored around what you bring. The hopes that you have and the challenges that are getting in the way. There’s no set formula for what we’ll talk about, but it usually includes exploring the stories that are holding you back, creating more space for the ones that will propel you forward, and strengthening the support systems that will help you get there.

Most clients will stay for a handful of sessions during their injury period, some stay on afterwards, and others just drop in for a single session. It’s up to you how much you share, how long you stay, and how you chose to use the time. Whatever you do - you don’t need to prepare anything in advance, just turn up and we’ll go from there.

  • 1-1 initial consultations happen online. After that they can either happen online or ocean side in the Coogee area. Group programs will be kicking off in Spring time - watch this space.

  • 50 minute sessions are $160 AUD. If money is a barrier, please get in touch.

  • Yes! Interestingly, research has found that athletes with a positive mental state tend to recover from injuries faster. Stress and anxiety affect our physiology, and as a result can actually slow down healing. Talking therapy can play an important part in developing and strengthening positive stories and coping strategies. This creates the conditions for getting you back to your strongest self; physically and mentally.
